Club activity（部活動・ぶかつどう）
It is very popular for students to get involved in club activities at junior high school and high school in Japan. It is not compulsory, but most of them join one of the clubs.
Depends on a club, but they sometimes have practice before school, after school and even on a weekend for a big tournament and competition.
No wonder some students sleep in class, instead of listening to their teacher!
